    Don't dismiss starches. Bread is a staple, as well as potatoes. The salty and savory snacks - pretzels, crisps/chips, crackers, rolls, pasta etc. can be worse than sugar.

    Perhaps a follow-up is in order. The problem might not be desserts as much as the main course.
