“I never dreamed this was possible”

steve

Steve started keto and intermittent fasting in January, after a search on the internet landed him on the Diet Doctor site. And the results he’s gotten in less than a year are so amazing that people have to ask him what he’s been doing, including his doctor who is very impressed and supportive.

Here he shares his experience with following a keto diet, and what makes it different from all the other diets he has attempted in the past:

Steve’s story

My name is Steve and I live in Oregon, USA. I am 67 years old, 5’8” (173 cm) tall and began this awesome journey on January 3rd, 2019 while vacationing in Hawaii.

Just days prior to leaving for my trip I was searching food nutrition facts on the web and accidentally came across the Diet Doctor site. The mission statement piqued my interest and I decided I wanted to know more. Having tried various diets over the years with limited results, I found the information and success stories quite detailed and compelling and continued to read on. Figuring I had nothing to lose (was I ever wrong), I began the “diet” upon arriving in Hawaii for two weeks. The only exception I made from eating the keto way I had just learned was enjoying all the wonderful fruit grown in the islands. Upon returning home, I stopped eating all fruit too as I could not wait to see if this would truly work for me.

I had worked out at the local gym for over 25 years, but took a 5-year hiatus and really put on the weight. Upon retirement I started working out again about 2 years before starting the keto program. I experienced no weight loss over those 2 years prior to keto, but recall a banner in the gym that said “exercise can’t change weight without proper nutrition”. Did I ever find out the truth in that statement! Along with my weight gain I snored bad enough to have put another bedroom to use for either my wife or myself depending on the particular night. I also had high blood pressure for many years and was prescribed medication starting with Lisinopril, then adding in Doxazosin, and later Amlodipine. My other major physical concern was a bone-on-bone left knee that had only about a 20% bending capability without screaming at me.

I began the keto eating way of life at 244 pounds (111 kg) in January 2019 (top weight was 255 lbs – 116 kg) and 5 months later I found myself at 193 pounds (88 kg). I have a stocky build and could stand to lose another 15-20 pounds (7-9 kg), but I feel so great it’s not something I’m fixated on like the first 50+ lbs (23+ kg). It’s just incredible how the fat seemed to melt away, especially after achieving what I’m sure was ketosis, although I never measured it.

I’ve really had no issues with eating low carb/high fat either, as I was so thrilled with my physical well being in such a relatively short period of time. I do incorporate intermittent fasting into my eating regimen on most days, usually a snack around 3:00-4:00 as my first meal of the day and it’s very easy for me. Just like the Diet Doctor staff says will happen – I’m just not hungry anymore. Hurray!!

I am writing this in November 2019 and my snoring is long gone as are the blood-pressure medications as well as the worst of the knee issues. My personal physician of over 30 years was shocked when he saw me for the first time after the weight loss and blood pressure changes (an urgent appointment I requested due to the low-pressure issues noted below). Of course, he wanted to know what I had done to lose so much weight. When I told him keto, he was very supportive and said I was the “poster boy” for such a dramatic health change (he had previously suggested the Mediterranean diet for me).

Please note the Diet Doctor team’s warning on the effect weight loss can have on blood pressure. Prior to my doctor giving the green light to stop all medications, I had a number of extremely low-blood pressure incidents that were quite alarming at the time.

It’s a shame the United States leads all countries in the obesity epidemic and so many lives could be changed if this eating method became widespread. Hopefully, some day. Many have asked how I made such dramatic changes to my health, but most just refuse to consider keto for themselves. All I can say is I’m so thankful for the Diet Doctor team, all of the very detailed information and the awesome success stories which drove me to this new stage of my life. I fully expect this will be a complete lifestyle change and not just a “diet” for me.

I had difficulty finding a before photo as I always shied away from having my picture taken due to my embarrassment at being so fat and out of shape. Since I started this program in Hawaii, I felt it only fitting to include both the before & after pictures from that beautiful state.

Thank you once again, as I never dreamed this was possible,
Steve
