When Melanie was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, she got a drug prescription and some dietary advice from her diabetic nutritionist that she wasn’t all that happy with. So, she started to look online for alternatives and she found the keto diet. This is her story:
Greetings from Down Under!
I know you must get so many of these emails but I just had to share my story with you very quickly.
I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic in May this year at age 39. After being given some metformin and seriously bad advice from my diabetic nutritionist, I watched The Magic Pill on Netflix. It changed my life. I was then referred to you by a man from a diabetic support page I had joined and so my keto journey began mid-July. I was 149.6 kg (339 lbs) and 5 feet 2 inches (157.5 cm) tall. I could barely move around without getting tired and slept almost all day and night.
By the end of July, I ceased taking metformin and began controlling my BSL (blood sugar level) myself with the keto diet and 18:6 intermittent fasting. It is now 20 September and along with losing 19 kg (42 lbs) (hopefully 20 kg (44 lbs) by the end of the month!), my BSL is leveled out at 5 most days, and I no longer take Nexium for chronic heartburn and acid reflux, no metformin, my sleep apnoea is improved and I’m sleeping better, I no longer sleep during the day, I no longer sweat profusely, I exercise by walking or riding my exercise bike or attending my gym 3-4 times a week, my mood is almost euphoric and I literally cannot sit still, I have what feels like boundless energy!
Since July, I have:
Reverted back to pre-diabetic hba1c level of 6.3
My blood pressure has gone from around 150/110 to 129/80
My sleep apnea has improved
I sleep so much better at night
I no longer and actually cannot nap during the day – too much energy!
My mood is almost euphoric. Planning to wean myself off antidepressants in the new year
My latest optometrist appointment last week shows my vision has actually improved from 5 years ago at my last appointment
My cooking skills are now almost professionally level lol
My body is still very obese, and some days it cannot keep up with the energy I actually feel but I’ll get there. I got my 3-month hb1ac results on Monday and I am now back to a pre-diabetic range (6.3) and hoping by the end of the year to be in complete remission. My good cholesterol is up and bad cholesterol is down. My fatty liver has improved much to my own GP’s shock.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Keto has changed my life and I will never ever go back.
Sincerely
Melanie Wilson
