My success story with Katrin Crum

Katrin was diagnosed as being morbidly obese, and was suffering from a number of health issues. She had tried a lot of different diets over the years but nothing had worked long term. We met up with Katrin on the Low Carb Cruise 2018 for an interview. Here’s also how Katrin ended up on the Low Carb Cruise, in her own words:


My name is Kat and I’ve been invited by my friend Jimmy Moore to attend the Low Carb Cruise as his guest. I’m so excited! I’m excited to learn and to share with others in the wonderfully supportive low/carb/keto community and I’m sure it will be an amazing experience!

I received an email that said you were looking for low carb/keto success stories and people who are willing to share their stories with others, so I wanted to respond to that call and share my story with you to see if it could possibly encourage and inspire others.

To say that switching to a low carb/keto diet changed my life is really an understatement, as it actually SAVED my life! I was diagnosed as being morbidly obese, tipping the scales at 307 pounds (139 kilos). I had high blood pressure that the doctor could not control even with two different medications. I was diagnosed with PCOS, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, low thyroid function and sleep apnea. I couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded and I was constantly exhausted. I knew I was on my way to diabetes, a heart attack, stroke and early death if I didn’t make a serious change in my life. So, I decided to try a low carb/keto diet.

I had tried every diet under the sun over the years, only to find the cravings for sugar and carbs would be so overwhelming, I couldn’t stick to it long enough to see real success. I thought I was a failure but then I started researching low carb/keto and I realized maybe I wasn’t a failure, but the previous diets had failed me.

So, I began my low carb/keto diet and to my amazement, my cravings for sugar and carbs began to disappear. My appetite, which had raged out of control, was suddenly diminished and I thought to myself, “Wow! I can do this!” My energy level soared, my mental clarity increased and my fatigue began to lift. I started feeling better than I had in years!

In the span of a year and a half, I lost 150 pounds (68 kilos) naturally using a low carb/keto diet! I went from 307 pounds to 157 pounds (139 pounds-71 kilos)! My high blood resolved itself naturally and I was able to get off all high blood pressure medications. And all of my other ailments resolved themselves as well! I not only lost weight but restored my healthy eating this way. And, I have maintained my weight loss for a year continuing with my low carb/keto way of eating.

People ask me all the time how I lost the weight and I am always happy to share my story. I hope my journey can encourage and inspire others to change their life and health for the better by switching to a low carb/keto diet.

Katrin Crum:  My husband made me feel like the prettiest girl in the room at 307 pounds. But he was very concerned about my health. I was well on my way to an early death, stroke or heart attack. And I’ve gone to a lot of different doctors over the years.

My doctor said, “You’ve got to make a change our you’re not going to be here much longer.” I started on a low-carb path about two years and a half ago. The first thing I did was get off wheat and sugar and that was the beginning point.

And then I moved into a pretty traditional low-carb diet. A lot of the reason that prior diets failed for me is because the craving cycle would be so intense, after a little while I would just cave-in.

For the first time my appetite started to come under control and in 18 month I lost 150 pounds. I just think there’s a big misnomer out there that people that are overweight are just fat and lazy people. That is absolutely not true.

And I don’t think there’s anybody who is morbidly obese and ill who says, “I want to be this way.” They just don’t know the way. You do have to dig deep at certain points in the journey. 150 pounds is a lot of weight to lose.

What I would tell people is just don’t give up hope. There is a way to regain your health and reverse the trend of obesity. So now I’m off all medications, my blood pressure is completely normalized, I have no more symptoms of PCOS, I don’t have hypertension, I’m no longer pre-diabetic.

I am actually healthier now at almost 50 than I was in my 30s and 40s. And so that’s what low-carb and keto has done for me. This is one of my pictures after losing 150 pounds. And I actually lost over 100 inches, which is really amazing as well.

So I went zip-lining for the first time and snorkeling and walking to the top of the Mayan pyramids and just all of these amazing experiences that I would not have been able to do. Just things like that, just being able to actively participate in life instead of, you know, sitting on the sidelines.

It’s so much more than the weight loss. The weight loss is a beautiful and wonderful byproduct. But it’s being able to regain your health and really be able to fully enjoy your life again.

    I did the same stall for 3 weeks, but I trusted the program and continued. I have lost 50 lbs since the second week of August. This is the best way of life I have found to stay satisfied, eat very well, and loose weight. I will be 69 in March. On Facebook, the group that helps a lot is Keto for women over 50. The other thing I learned from was Eric Burg videos on youtube. I don't exercise because of health problems, but keto works without it. Tell her to relax and trust the program, and have a couple of pieces of bacon to celebrate being cancer free.

    My name is Georgia & I'm 59. I just started this journey & new lifestyle change in January. My A1C was high and my Dr. likened me to a truck. You can put the best oil in the engine and buy the best gas, but I will get much better gas mileage if I detach the trailer that I'm pulling. Too much weight will burn out the engine & it will stop. He gave me the info I needed to get started with this program. It's been 2 months and I've lost 23 lbs. My husband has lost 27 lbs with 14 to go. I have learned a lot and I'm making adjustments along the way. I read a success story every morning while I drink my coffee. Hearing what others have done has helped me. We're all different so we need to find what works for us individually. I wasn't losing after the 2nd week. I tried fasting for 27 hours and gained 1/2 lb. What? Then I read about the "Fat Fasts". My body doesn't like long fasts. I do better fasting from dinner at 6:00 pm until my brunch at 11:00. I also really cut back on my veggies eating spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, broccoli, zucchini. For brunch I will eat 1 fried egg and 5 pieces of bacon. Around 2:00 I have 5 macadamia nuts & 1 fat bomb. At Dinner I eat 1 C. of pulled pork with 2 T. butter, chicken broth, & sliced mushrooms in it. I will eat spinach with 0 cal. dressing. I have started losing 2-3 lbs a week now. I'm not hungry and it works. I also drink 0 cal Powerade with electrolytes. I also take a multi-vitamin and put cream of tarter in my meat for potassium. My leg cramps stopped. For me, I do need to watch my calories and limit my carbs, even with veggies. I can't wait to share my success story by my 60th b-day in Sept. I hope this helps. And like the other comment, trust the program but make adjustments that fit your body. Good luck.

    Thanks for your meal tips, I have lost a few pounds after 10 days with very low carb(<20 gm/d) but have trouble eating all the fat...117gm recommended! I am measuring ketones and range from mod to small but today actually gained 1.5 lbs from yesterday? Trying not to be discouraged...will try your meal pattern and see what happens :)
