Can a ketogenic diet serve as an Overeaters Anonymous food plan?

Ask Bitten Jonsson

Can a ketogenic diet serve as an Overeaters Anonymous food plan? What resources are there for healthcare professionals to help clients with food addiction? And is using stevia okay?

These and other questions are answered this week by our food-addiction expert, Bitten Jonsson, RN:

Can a ketogenic diet serve as an Overeaters Anonymous food plan?

I’m a compulsive eater and sugar/carb addict and member of Overeaters Anonymous. I’ve gotten a lot of relief by following a strict ketogenic diet ā€“ no sweets at all. OA recommends strict quantities eaten at regular intervals – but can that be compatible with the keto creed to eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full? What if your full signal is broken?

Margaret

Margaret, glad you asked and yes, it certainly will, the keto food plan is excellent for us but as you have thought of, we food addicts also have to be aware of eating behavior. Overeating or as I prefer to call it ā€œvolume addictionā€ is one of many symptoms and or negative coping strategies we develop through the years battling the illness. Therefore many of us need help with making a food plan where we weigh and measure and have a food sponsor that is knowledgeable and willing to help with that.

Send me an email bitten.jonsson@bittensaddiction.com if you can not find one, I have people that can help you. Wish you great recovery.

My best,
Bitten

What resources are there for health-care professionals to help clients with food addiction?

Would love to know what books or lectures you recommend so that I am better equipped to help my clients with food addiction. Most of them do well during the week and then lose it on the weekend. Would love to give them tools and tips to help them have success.

Thanks,
Sandra

Last year we started the first “Food addiction counselor certification” training and next year it starts again in January. I also advise you to join the support group “Sugarbomb in your brain ” on Facebook and listen to and learn from people afflicted.

If you send me an email, bitten.jonsson@bittensaddiction.com, I will provide you with a literature list for sugar/flour/food addiction and aslo suggest some youtube videos that are helpful.

A warm welcome to my world,
Bitten

Is using stevia okay?

Is using stevia okay?

D

D, it depends of who is asking. Sugar addicts will tend to relapse if they use sweeteners and it will keep our sweet tooth going. So be careful.

Take care,
Bitten
