    Its generally well known in lab experiments that mice can live up to 30% longer on a restricted diet. Of course there are other factors that determine longevity other than diet however most of the evidence on dietdoctor is showing that diet is the priority for good health and longevity.

    Theres a very well written book "Periodic Fasting Repair Your DNA, Grow Younger and Learn to Appreciate Your Food" by Christi Vlad a civil enginneer who became convinced of the benefits of the keto diet and intermittent fasting in January 2014 after travelling from Romania to Thailand via bus and plane thru 6 time zones over a period of 2 days with very little sleep yet he was not fatigued on arrival in Phuket and went out and partied till 4am on Friday morning.

    Professor Richard Feinman says in the foreward that Christi's book is a "comprehensive view of fasting" the content includes observations of fasting in the animal kingdom, the personal historical evidence of Luigi Cornaro (102 years) and Upton Sinclair (90 years) and examines the modern research on obesity, longevity and fitness done by George Cahill, Peter Kerndt, Ancel Keys, Valter Longo (mentioned in the dietdoctor linked article for developing a fasting mimicking diet), Peter Attia, Jeff Volek, Stephen Phinney and Thomas Sefried. The reference section lists 247 sources that can be followed up online at pubmed, various sites and Youtube.

    Christi explains the science of keto adaptation, the circadian clock, lipogenesis, glycogen depletion and lipolysis to give an understanding how dieting and intermittent fasting work. Chapter 5 deals with the underlying molecular level of fasting which activates AMP kinase, SIRT1 and reduces mTOR to promote both apoptosis and cell repair. This is a complicated chapter for the novice and for me I had come back to it a month later to understand it.

    Overall the book lacks the humour and debate that Dr Jason Fung is known for not that Christi lacks humour but many readers describe Chapter 5 as very dry and difficult. It would help if the book had a glossary.

    For lighter reading people might enjoy the free download of Upton Sinclairs "The Fasting Cure" from the Internet Archive which contains anecdotal letters written to him and his own experimentation with meat and vegetarian based diets during the early 1900's. Should not be taken as medical advice but is an entertaining insight into what people used to do back then.

    Valter Longo does not agree that a hflc diet is healthy. He feel the normal diet should be high in carbs and low in protein.
