What is creatine?

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials involving 608 postmenopausal women found a small increase in lean mass and an improvement in leg press strength with creatine supplementation.
The benefits were most evident when at least 5 grams per day was combined with resistance training. Trials using 3 grams or less without resistance training did not show measurable benefits.

Creatine isn’t a substitute for using your muscles. Think of it as something that may help you get more from strength training, while the training itself remains fundamental.
Is creatine good for bone health?
Possibly, but the evidence is less convincing.
Maintaining bone health becomes increasingly important as we age, particularly during and after menopause.
Creatine may support bone health indirectly by helping maintain muscle and physical function. However, the recent meta-analysis in postmenopausal women found no significant overall improvement in bone mineral density.

So while this is an interesting area of research, we wouldn’t currently recommend creatine primarily for improving bone density.
Can creatine support brain health, mood, or memory?
