When it comes to using nutrition, the answer is yes. Meet Ivor Cummins, who quickly had to become an expert to cure himself.

Ivor Cummins is a well-trained problem solver. And when blood tests showed liver problems – the very common issue fatty liver – Cummins set out to find the solution to the problem. And he soon found it. Soon he had lost lots of weight and his liver problems were totally gone.

It all begged the question – why did an engineer quickly understand how to cure himself using nutrition, when none of his doctors could help him?

I interviewed Ivor Cummins a few weeks ago and it’s a truly interesting and insightful story. Above is a short segment from it.

    Ivor's blog is thoroughly recommended, though it's principally a video blog and I'm old fashioned enough that I *read* faster than I watch videos. Especially watch his interview with Joseph Kraft, now in his nineties. If he'd been believed all that time ago most of us would probably not be here.

    Sorry. Not buying it. It is common knowledge to all physicians that fatty liver can be reversed through nutrition. This is actually told to patients daily. If he doesn't think he was told this, he was tuned out when all three told him. The funny thing is nothing on this site is not already known by your physician. Getting your insurance company to let it all happen is a different story..or the hospital etc.

    Wrong Michael - it was exactly as I told it. My brother actually diagnosed with fatty liver via scan (he is slim). Doc told him to lower his fat intake right down, and eat plenty fruit etc. I told him the exact opposite. Doc was confused a few weeks later with his bloods - they improved too fast - unsettled him. He then got angry when my brother told him the solution - and handed him a food pyramid sheet. You couldn't make it up. This is the just the way it is.

    Here is my take on all this. I have for more than a decade thought we should pay more attention to outliers. In a short presentation, one cannot possibly cover (and an engineer cannot possibly know and intuit) individual differences. Mr. Cummins is covering the basics in his presentations. Yes to that. But it does come off as too glib and self congratulatory for his knowledge base. Too many folks in their chosen fields become hidebound, yes. But then there's the phenomenon of the outsider "expert" who has no perspective and no humility and no real skepticism. Please do not play that game, Mr. Cummins. I sincerely hope my incipient misgivings about the 2017 presentation I just watched are based solely on my limited knowledge of your entire message. As for my own story: since May 1, 2017 I have been on a portion-controlled, no-processed-sugar, no-processed-foods eating plan, mostly fruits and vegetables with high quality fats and protein, along with minimally-processed grains. I dropped 60# over 12 months (normal BMI) and feel better than I have in decades. The markers you mention are interesting and I will follow up. I do love your problem-solving approach (I almost switched to engineering mid-career because of the risk management angle inherent in engineering. It's all about risk assessment and prevention, ain't it?). But do, do be careful of the outsider expert phenomenon. And don't rest on these laurels. You don't know everything, nor does anyone. Guard against the same group think that is so prevalent (and intellectually stultifying) in clinical human medicine. Find people you trust who question your assumptions and keep you from going very far down the wrong path. Thank you!
