Good times

Above is my second pair of Vibram Five Fingers, bought on the trip. Very comfortable! In the background you can see Jamaica disappearing as the cruise ship moves on. The only obstacle for total relaxation is that my lecture to the group is tomorrow. After that it’s time for pure vacation.

Tonight is “Formal Night”, so we need to dress up for dinner. Should I wear my VFFs with my suit?

I have been on Low Carb since 1st Jan 2011 and have lost about 18 pounds (~9kg). Good news. However, my weight has recently plateaued.

    At the end of April, I had my annual thyroid function test (TSH, T4, T3) - I take 75mcg T4 and 20mcg T3. My TSH was .67 (0.35-4.5), T4 12.1 (11-24) and T3 3.8 (4-6.8). i.e. my T4 and T3 are now both low. Bad.

I fully support the low carb diet, but we need to remain alert to the stresses it may put on other systems in the body. In my case, it may have increased my need for supplemental thyroid hormone - I have now increased my thyroid . The dip in thyroid hormone also coincided with a tooth abscess and a general malaise.

Broda Barnes (Hypothyroidism - The Unsuspected Illness - Page 273) "Apparently, a diet high in protein requires additional thyroid for metabolism". I realize I could lower protein and increase fat - but I think it would be easier to take more thyroid.

So, in the rush away form carbs, lets not, in our enthusiasm, forget that fat and protein metabolism may present problems for some (and these will be confounders in any diet studies).

Enjoy the cruise and hope you have managed to get some cool interviews.

With a .67 TSH I don't think you are too low in thyroid hormone.

I hope to get some cool interviews too!

  3. Doc, you've got the link texts for the nav links at the bottom of the page mixed up (Older Entries/Newer Entries).

    Nice legs though!

  4. Also, the Edit function isn't turned on.
  5. I have quite a lot of updates from the cruise on my Eng page :)
See the little Eng. flag in the top right corner ;)

    hemul #3,
You're right, that should be fixed soon.

    I put up a link! :)

  7. Thx Doc! ;)
  8. Paul, some people say that folks with hypothyroidism need to have moderate carbs and not go too low. That is the other solution. ;)
