Why Professor Noakes supported high carb

Professor Tim Noakes has made a huge impact in South Africa, helping tens if not hundreds of thousands of people to transform their lives – losing weight effortlessly and reversing diabetes – on low-carb diets (or Banting, as it’s often called in South Africa).

This led to pushback from the authorities, and a multi-year trial where he was finally found innocent yesterday.

But Professor Noakes was not always a low-carb supporter. For decades he used to be a major international proponent of high-carb diets, especially for athletes. Then he changed his mind, famously ripping a segment out of his own textbook on the subject.

So why did he support high carb earlier? And why did he change his mind completely? He told it all in his presentation at the LCHF Convention in Cape Town.

You can watch a segment from the presentation above (transcript). The full presentation is available on our member site:

I have followed the events surrounding that infamous tweet! I am so happy for you this trial is over! The day we cannot give an honest opinion on any subject is the day freedom is lost. Thank God for you the truth prevailed. I know what you and your family endured. Somehow I also knew all would turn out for the good! Turning to a low carb lifestyle is not easy given the current state of dietary guidelines across the globe. But, it does work! Stay the course!
