New study: Cutting sugar and NOT calories improves kids’ health in just 10 days!

Sorry Coca-Cola, and all other calorie fundamentalists, out there. The evidence is in and basic energy balance does not appear to be the whole story. Sugar appears to actually be toxic in itself.

More and more people have long suspected that sugar is one of the main drivers of the obesity epidemic, and the diseases related to it, like type 2 diabetes. Lots of studies point in that direction. But it’s a hard thing to definitely prove. A new study published today strengthens the argument considerably.

The study had 43 kids with obesity and metabolic syndrome eat less sugar for just 10 days. Importantly, they had an equal amount of calories, the only difference was that the fructose from sugar was replaced with starch.

The result was improvement in just about all factors connected to metabolic syndrome: better blood pressure, better blood sugar, way lower insulin, even without any effect on weight. All this by reducing sugar and NOT calories, for just 10 days.

The story is all over the media today:

I started by reading the Time Article. At the bottom is an article telling me that bananas are the number 1 healthiest of all foods of all time. They then give me a banana smoothy recipe. Anybody know how much sugar is in the recipe?

I appreciate the links to the different newspaper reports. It is fascinating to compare the editorial slants of the different newspapers.

Yes, the banana smoothie article is written by Alexandra Sifferlin, a "health expert" writer for TIME who according to her LinkedIn profile follows the famous Dr Katz:

So, it looks like they "balance" the win for anti low carb article by following it up with a Dr Katz disciple at TIME. In fact, look at the "ultra healthy" muffin recipe Dr Katz recently provided in his "Katz Family" cuisincity website:

    1 cup canola oil
    ¾ cup dark brown sugar
    1 Tbsp honey
    2 large cage-free eggs
    1 15 oz canned pumpkin (100% pure)
2 ¾ cups whole wheat pastry flour
    1 Tbsp baking powder
    2 tsp cinnamon
½ cup bittersweet chocolate chips (60% cocoa)

Not sure which part is more toxic to health: Canola oil? Wheat flour? Brown sugar?

With doctors like Dr Katz, and brainless disciples like Alexandra Sifferlin, who needs enemies.

All three Canola, wheat flour and brown sugar all toxic.
Never use canola or any of the so called healthy oils. Stick with olive oil for cold salads etc and coconut oil for high heat cooking.
