FDA Now Belongs to Big Pharma?

Here’s some scary news from last week: The newly confirmed head of the US Food and Drug Administration, Robert Califf, has taken money from no fewer than 23 different drug companies. He’s also said some very friendly things about Big Pharma.

This has not only scared natural news websites but also caused democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders to try to block Califf, saying that…

Dr. Califf’s extensive ties to the pharmaceutical industry give me no reason to believe that he would make the FDA work for ordinary Americans, rather than just the CEOs of pharmaceutical companies…

Sanders may be a bit too socialistic for many people, but sometimes that is a good thing. Someone needs to be able to stand up to the drug companies and represent the people at the FDA. Who will do that now?

We would never accept a judge that had been taking money from the defendants. In what way is this different?

This seems like a major win for Big Pharma. Expect them to make even more billions on lethal drugs like Vioxx in the future. And expect Americans to pay even more for new drugs of doubtful benefit and carefully hidden harms.

If you want to read something really scary I recommend these fantastic books from Dr. Peter C. Gøtzsche, one of the co-founders of the Cochrane Collaboration:

I recently read Gøtzsche's book Deadly Medicine, and it is excellent. He worked for a pharmaceutical company for a couple of years then he got his MD. Gøtzsche is the director of the Nordic Cochrane Collaboration---he is a hero for global health and science.

Read the charges in this new suit recently filed against former head of FDA--it is just as described by Gøtzsche's book Deadly Medicine.

One example-- Hamburg's husband and his company owned $500 million in J&J stock, and Hamburg was making decisions--fake fixes on levofloxacin (J&J makes this antibiotic, a fluoroquinolone FQ) which has killed many thousands, likely more than vioxx, and permanently injured millions. She ignored citizen petitions, delayed making changes to the label, and generally supported Pharma over patients. The FDA has known about this for about 30 years but they have done nothing. Do your own research on FQs--they are neurotoxic, mitochondrial toxins, and you will be lucky if your MD even admits that they cause tendon rupture.

What's scary is unaccountable government bureaucrats make rules and regulations that favor big pharma and big cronies. Sunlight, freedom of expression and freedom of choice can fix this mess but governments will allow neither.
The DietDoctor site does more to enhance personal freedom and personal heath than all the world's bureaucrats and pharmaceutical companies combined. Keep up the exceptional work!

The FDA ought to be the watch dog guarding the public health against Big Pharma abuses and excess. "Elite Capture" is the term used when an influential public official is paid off and does the bidding of industry. I'm afraid this guy will be paying too much attention to his pay masters to actually do his real job, protecting the health of Americans.
Another great book on the topic of Drug company hijinx is "Bad Pharma" by Ben Goldacre. http://amzn.com/0865478007

But isn't Califf a scientist and scientists never lie, shade the truth, give misinformation, or otherwise do anything but present the pure scientific evidence either on nutrition, drugs, or Global Warming (or climate change or whatever they are calling it now that the data shows it has flatlined or cooled - about the time we were told to stop eating fat and eat carbs we were told there was an impending ice age). What did Piltdown and Nebraska man eat in their paleo diets?
