A Healthy Mind and Body Through Yoga

Yoga used to be considered a bit of a New Age and alternative exercise, but today yoga has found its place in the mainstream. Not only is it good for exercise and physical conditioning, it’s also reported to be very meditative, and can benefit both your body and your mind.

There are different types of yoga exercises you can try, from some of the most basic poses that you can hold for long periods of time for meditation and increasing flexibility, to more challenging poses and movements that can turn gentle yoga into a more aerobic workout.

Yoga meditation is touted as a way to increase flexibility, tone your body and reduce stress. While yoga and mediation have always gone hand in hand, few except true yoga fans saw much benefit in doing one or both until several years ago when yoga began to become more popular. No longer did you only find yoga in classes with Bohemian types, but it began being offered to everyone with less of an alternative focus and one more aimed at the everyday exerciser.

Many people began practicing yoga for its body toning and conditioning properties, only to discover a sort of yoga therapy was happening. While they were getting their bodies more healthy, their minds sort of cleared up, too. Better clarity of thought, ability to concentrate and better focus are all side effects of yoga training . While any exercise can help your mind work better, the gentle and fluid movements of yoga, and the necessity of holding poses while only deep breathing, seem to have some special effect on the stress levels and thought processes.

Whether you want a better body or the ability to think more clearly, you should keep some basic exercise tips in mind. Yoga is something you can do on your own or with a group. There should be at least a few different yoga classes in your area if you feel inspired to try something in a group setting. Or there are a number of books and DVDs you can use at home if you prefer to exercise alone.

Many people find they prefer the expert instruction they can get in a group class, and they feel more motivation to continue when they’re accountable to others by showing up each week. It’s a good idea to continue to practice yoga at home if your classes are only once a week, so that you can get more benefit from the exercises.

Always stretch a little and warm up before any exercise. And with yoga it’s especially important not to try to force your body into any positions it doesn’t want to go. The key is gentleness, patience and repetition. Practice these, and your body will gradually limber up.

Also, most yoga practitioners stress the importance of diet for your body, mind and your mood. Try reading some diet reviews to find eating plans that other yoga fans follow and see if the more natural yoga diet is something that you can live with, or modify to suit your lifestyle.
