Be Smart about Snacking
What does a snack really mean? A snack is something that you eat when those pangs of hunger suddenly strike and when you are too far away from either lunchtime or dinnertime. That’s the basic purpose of a snack – to energize you till the next mealtime. However, it is sorry to see how most people take snacks in a completely wrong way. Instead of being mini-meals that should sustain them till the next meal, snacks are eaten needlessly to such an extent that they kill their appetite for the actual meal. That’s definitely not what snacks are meant to be.

Most snacks that we see around us are greasy and laden with empty calories. Empty calories are calories that do zilch for the body, but simply keep piling up. This is the number one reason for excessive weight gain in the world today. These junk snacks are leading entire nations to their peril and people are quite blissful about this internal enemy. Anyway, if you begin controlling things at your own individual level, you can definitely find a solution to the problem.
The snacks that are in your agenda must be all healthy snacks . It sounds quite an oxymoron there, because we don’t associate snacks with health at all. But if you go back to the way we defined snacks right at the start, you will understand what snacks are really supposed to do – fuel us till the next meal. In that case, even if you have just an apple when you are hungry, it qualifies as a snack. Or, you could have some veggie crunches or even a bowlful of any soup of your choice. These foods can easily pacify your hunger till the mealtime is due and, in most cases, even satiate your taste buds.
If you are really a connoisseur about eating and cannot stand such foods, you could try something that’s more delectable but at the same time healthier. The store shelves are nowadays full of health foods and you can take your choice from among them. Suggested foods include health bars , nutrition bars , protein bars and the like. They are sold in different ways, but they essentially do the same thing – provide the body with nutrition and satisfy the hunger pangs.
Go for any snack, but make sure it is low fat and low calorie . Keep these two things in mind and you will see that you are keeping your body in better shape. If you are watching your weight, the daily calorie counter becomes important to you. You can stay in tune with it by managing what you eat. It is essential to eat foods that are healthy and do not merely pile you up with calories.
Remember that food affects your stress levels also. If you eat too much, you are more vulnerable to become stressed with life. You could develop emotional disorders easily. Research has proved that unhealthy snacking is a reason for this increase in the levels of stress.
The main thing is that you have to generate the motivation within yourself that prevents you from having unhealthy snacks. For some people, just looking in the mirror could be a motivation; for some others, learning about the ill effects of junk food on their bodies could be what inspires them to keep off them.
