Starches Must Be Avoided

Here Again Moderation Is The Rule

Losing weight is never easy. It seems as though there is a new approach to dieting every week. Each one will promise you that you will lose all the weight that you want without ever gaining it back, if you follow the rules of the diet. One diet that has proven to be successful for some dieters is the low carb approach. This diet involves a severe restriction in the carbohydrates that are consumed and concentrates your meals on proteins and fats. Starches are a complex carbohydrate that fall into this category and should be avoided if you want to lose weight on this diet plan.

The reason that starches and foods high in sugars are avoided on this type of diet is to keep the blood glucose level from being elevated too much during the course of the day. One thing that you should be aware of if you are researching low carbohydrate diets in an effort to lose weight is that not all starches are the same. Some are digested by the body quickly, which will cause the blood glucose level to rise over a longer period of time, and others are digested more slowly or not digested in the same way. These cause very little spikes in blood sugar levels.

Foods that are higher in rapidly-digested starch are higher on the glycemic index or cause a bigger impact on the blood glucose levels. Grains, potatoes, corn, beans and foods that are made from grains are all higher on the glycemic index and cause a spike in the blood sugar levels.

While these foods will cause a spike in the blood sugar levels in your body, it is best not to eliminate food groups from your diet completely. It is better to monitor what you eat and stick to a plan of moderation. Diets that ask you to completely eliminate or dramatically cut your intake of an entire food group are extremely difficult to stick to for a long time. Many people have found great success with these diets, but find it hard to stay on the diet and keep up the weight loss. As a result, the weight is gained back and in many cases, more weight is gained back than was lost in the first place.

A diet that follows proper nutrition and includes foods from all the food groups is a much better approach to weight loss. Keep the starchy foods to a minimum but don’t exclude them completely from your diet. You should also look for some exercise tips and get moving if you hope to lose weight. A weight loss program that has motivation and includes a healthy diet and plenty of exercise is the key to success for the long term. Read some diet reviews and find a program that is sensible and will help you to lose weight slowly, over a longer period of time. Set realistic goals and eventually you will get there.
