Longer Lives with Less Insulin?

This is a fascinating new TED talk. Certain genes, when activated, make worms, flies and mice live much longer. Almost identical genes exist in humans and may have the same effect. But these genes are turned off by insulin and IGF-1.

Cynthia Keynon curiously does not mention it in this talk, but drugs and gene therapy is not the only way to get this effect. There is another simpler way and she is doing it herself. Removing excess carbs from the diet is a very effective way to lower insulin and IGF-1, activating the long-life genes.

Here is an earlier interview with her: Can cutting carbohydrates from your diet make you live longer?

The Real Cause of Obesity

Lustig in the centre

Professor Robert Lustig had two very good lectures at the ASBP obesity conference last weekend. As you can see above, the attending doctors were very interested in talking to him and asking questions afterwards.

The topic for the talks: Why do we get fat, and how can we treat it? Professor Lustig understands the answers better than anybody else I know.

Here are some of the insights he shared in his talks:  Continue Reading →

Obesity and the trouble with sugar

Here is professor Robert Lustig’s insightful talk from AHS – again. This time the slides are included in the video (not always perfectly synced) which makes the video much more watchable.

Lustig has a very believable explanation to how our weight regulation works, and why it sometimes do not. The core of his message: Too much fructose (or even more glucose) in the diet increases the hormone insulin which induces leptin resistance and makes us want to eat too much.

See his talk and you will understand more about obesity than many confused experts do. Personally I have seen it three times, which makes me feel very smart.

The Taubes and Guyenet show goes on

Gary Taubes is back from a long blogging hiatus with an interesting post. As usual, when Gary writes he writes a lot. Even the title is long:

Within about five minutes Stephan Guyenet had his own new post up, detailing why Gary Taubes is wrong again:

They both have a few good points. But is this really just about the science? Continue Reading →

Guyenet, Taubes and why low carb works

After the recent fireworks at AHS, perhaps this should not come as a surprise. Neurobiologist and popular blogger Stephan Guyenet has posted on why he does not believe in (refined) carbohydrates as an important cause of obesity. Although he does acknowledge that a low carb diet is effective for making you lose weight.

Sound complicated? It is:

Whole Health Source: The Carbohydrate Hypothesis of Obesity – a Critical Examination

This makes me think of a common saying regarding forests and trees (thus the illustration). Let’s untangle this mess. Continue Reading →

Across the river for water: Surgery for diabetes

In Sweden we have an ideom: “Don’t walk across the river to get water”. I’m sure you see why – but not everybody thinks like that.

Many scientists are amazed today. They don’t know how to explain why so many type 2 diabetics are cured by gastric bypass surgery, when their stomach is removed. At least they need a lot less insulin – from day one!

What’s the cause? Continue Reading →

Why We Get Fat

Last year I interviewed Gary Taubes at the ASBP conference in Seattle. The subject is “Why we get fat, and what to do about it” – the title of his brand new book.

I am a big fan of Taubes although I don’t agree with everything he says. Continue Reading →
