A broken world

Something is badly wrong. While the prosperity of the world has never been higher, people are suffering. More and more people – the majority in the Western world – are obese or overweight, and a large proportion are on prescription drugs every day for the rest of their lives.

Every year new people add to the sad statistics. As we get ever richer as a society our health appears to decline. Why is this?

People feel guilt and shame, like if the excess weight, hunger and tiredness was their fault, a moral failing. They count their calories and attempt to eat less food and exercise more, but it’s not working. If only they had more willpower.

Diabetes type 2 – a new epidemic in the history of humankind – will soon reach 500 million people. The death toll will be immense, as will the armies of people suffering the consequences: blindness, dementia, heart disease, cancer. This new disease is considered incurable and the treatment is daily drugs to reduce the symptoms. There is no cure, expert say.

Obesity – another new epidemic soon affecting half the population – is considered almost as incurable. The only effective treatment is said to be bariatric surgery, i.e. surgically removing parts of healthy organs. An operation with a significant risk of resulting in life-long misery and sometimes even death. And a year after surgery the excess weight usually starts returning.

What’s even worse, epidemics of obesity and diabetes are the tip of the iceberg. As these problems spread across the world other diseases soon follow: heart disease, cancer, eating disorders and food addiction, high blood pressure, ADHD, depression and on and on.

Experts still trumpet eating less and exercising more to slow down the epidemics. But that’s what we’ve been saying for 30 years, while the problem has exploded. It’s not working.

It may be even worse. The problem really started to get bad in the early 80s, just when we were told to eat “healthily”, just when the first Dietary Guidelines for Americans were released, and then copied around the world. That’s when the epidemic started.

Possibilities and what’s holding us back

Something is very wrong in the world today. Our bodies are made to stay healthy through our lives, and supply us with the energy to reach our goals and our potential. We can absolutely return to this natural state. With the resources the world has today there should be no stopping us.

This is not about a lack of willpower. You already have all the willpower you’ll ever need.

Imagine a world where all people can feel good in their bodies again, where all kids can run and play without catching their breath every few steps, where there’s no need for mass pill popping, a nation no longer on drugs, where nobody is obsessively counting calories to starve themselves. Where health is normal again. Where we can reach our potential and care for each other. Where we use our willpower for higher purposes, together shaping a better world for our children.

Much of what we need to get there is already known. But it’s not that simple. The food industry profits from selling cheap, low-fat, highly processed, nutritionally depleted and addictive food. And we’re advised to eat at least every three hours. The pharmacological industry profits by selling daily medications to temporarily reduce the symptoms of all the diseases caused by the food.

Junk-to-Drugs

These are trillion dollar industries. There’s a lot of money to be made keeping you sick.

The truth is obscured by corporate propaganda, companies selling junk food and pills, using lies, to the benefit of their shareholders, but to the detriment of humanity. It’s obscured by government ineptitude, allowing corporations to rule via armies of high-payed lobbyists, while relying on old experts who are often stuck in failed preconceptions, unable to update their thinking. That is, if the experts are not simply funded by corporations too.

Just as an example, it was recently exposed how Coca-Cola spend tens of millions of dollars buying the loyalty of government health experts and scientists as well as high-profile bloggers and personal trainers. To not mention the dangers of drinking sugar. To keep quiet about it. That’s the reality behind their slogan about “open happiness” and billions of dollars of feel-good advertising. How is obesity, disease and lies the road to happiness?

It may seem impossible to change this. What can one person do? Not much. But together, using modern tools… if we have the will, we can change anything.

Towards the solution

What would you do if there was a clear way to make the world a better place?

Most of the truth we need is already out there, it is already known, many are already using it with fantastic results. What’s needed is to find this truth and make it as simple as possible to use. To empower people everywhere to revolutionize their health.

This can’t be achieved using old thinking, we’ll have to question everything. And it can’t be achieved by selling a magic product, a pill or a packaged food product or by financing from the corporations who are profiting from the status quo. That’s the thinking that got us into this mess.

Here at Diet Doctor we want to be a part of the solution. That’s why we’ve decided to take no money from industry, sell no food, no supplements, no other products and to have no ads.

The solution

The solution to the obesity and diabetes epidemics already exists. It’s very simple:

LCHF Food

That’s basically it. Although there are details too: if you want to lose weight effortlessly or improve your diabetes you should probably make a special effort to drastically reduce the carbohydrates, especially sugar and processed starch (like flour).

Natural fat, like butter? Eating that is fine. Red meat? That’s fine too. Calories? That’s just another, bizarre, name for food. Eating real food is perfectly fine, as long as you are hungry. Counting calories and ignoring your hunger is an eating disorder.

Exercise? That’s great for your health and well-being, but it’s never going to make you thin. You cannot outrun a bad diet.

There’s only one long-term solution that is truly effective. Eat real food, when you are hungry.

Why change is so slow

So if the problem is so huge, and the solution already exists – why is the problem not solved already?

TIME: Eat ButterBecause of inertia, old dogma and vested interests. Primarily it’s just hard for us humans to change our minds. It takes time.

The mistaken fear of natural fat is still just about alive, like some kind of half-dead zombie – even though modern science has thoroughly disproven it. The magazine TIME even put this fact on their cover in 2014. Fearing natural fat leads to even more high-carb, high-sugar junk food – so it’s been a really bad idea.

There is also massive money to be made from the status quo. The entire food and pharmaceutical industries depend on it, and they employ armies of lobbyists and even researchers.

The food industry wants to divert the blame from their own bad food (the real problem) to their consumers. Thus their emphasis on calorie counting, “personal responsibility” and exercise.

The pharmacological industry does not want people to get well. It’s easy to understand why. That would put them out of business.

The government would love to improve the health of the people, but official agencies move slowly and they are easy prey for trained lobbyists and influencers. Just look at Michelle Obama’s sadly failed “Let’s Move” campaign. As soon as the junk-food industry got involved it all turned into empty pep talk, with no real change that anybody truly believes in.

Bringing the solution to the people

    i am a 29 year old woman and I've struggled with my weight my whole life. The only way I lose weight and keep it off is by exercising 45min in the morning and at night and eating perfectly. I started LCHF in August 2015 and gained 7lbs and can't seem to lose it. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have 35% cream in my coffee, cook with butter and coconut oil, eat limited amounts of vegetables. Don't eat the foods that are not allowed. My doctor is now having my thyroid checked. any advice? Am I possibly eating too much protein?

    I was going thru some of the older comments and saw that you'd done an app on LCHF food. Without buying the app the impression I get from the pics of your app in iTunes is that you are mixing up calories (which are totally unimportant in LCHF) and carb counts, which are essential. This was early 2014 so it maybe sorted out by now..

    Inspiring recepes for an occasional cook. I will make my first attempt this evening with the egg pizza, vegetarian version. However, I am very dubious about olive and high temperature cooking. The belief over here (UK) is that there could be carcinogenic effects. Rapeseed oil is preferred.

    I started the LCHF last November. I find this site so exiting and very informative. Learning about new way to keep your health on a good level and changing the lifestye. Furthermore its challenging to convince the family what you are doing since all of them living eating the traditional HCLF - High carb low fat! The good experience is fantastic sleep and no problem with heartburn anymore.
    I would like to share some problem or question I have and Iam facing. Weight loss is in my opinon not possible. Since two weeks even on very low carb <20 g/day. I came just from 98 down to 96 kg, I guess this is just water which I've lost. I checking my food and fat using the fddb diary to control it to some extend.
    Any tips to start the weight loss running.

    Since to weeks I am really try to understand my body more doing LCHF on very low carbs. I measure my boodsugar twice a day and also the keto values once a day. There is a big question as a beginner and maybe someone can give me some tips. Iam not so experienced evalute the blood sugar values that good. One expample Keto value is at 1.1 and bloodsugar is at 74 mg/dl. The values are since a week in the range of blood sugar 74- 98 mg/dl and the keto values arround 0,7 - 1.1. Is there a critical value of blood sugar to go down?

    Your blood values will go down a bit when you are in ketosis, it's not much more exciting than that I think. 🙂 There will be no extreme changes.

    Normally it's easy to go up in weight. Do the opposite way around compared to when you would like to loose weight. Eat a bit more than needed to feel satisfied and don't skip meals ... or do some snacking, why not have some nuts every now and then. 🙂

    I have more energy, able to play 18 holes of golf without tiring as opposed to 9 - 12 holes.. I weight 172 in 1964 when I married my fantastic wife. I am diabetic and have done from over 200 units of insulin to between 20 - 40 units per day.

    My physician recommended I look up Dr. J. Fung and found him to help my situation.

    My question: wife now has stage 3 renal disease . Does LCHF diet help or hurt. Her physician recommends high carb low protein .

    Can it take a while before feeling full and naturally eating less? My husband has started lchf (couple of weeks ago) and aiming to eat within an 8 hour time frame. He's very heavy, t2 diabetic and sugars quite high. He eats a lot (easily up to 4000 cals) and still seems to be hungry. I aim for 85% fat, but find it difficult to get there, and try to keep carbs down to 5%.

    You recently ran my success story here and it's brought so many people to my blog, Findyourfood.org as well as our Facebook Group Find Your Food. I wanted to share that this is really touching people's lives.

    One gal wrote today: (Ermine Poort) "Definitely an inspiration! I have been on this 'diet' since this april 11 and I am convinced that this is the way to eat. I never had a carb addiction, and never have been more than 10/20 kilos overweight. But always those 10 extra next to I packing on inch after inch per year. Now I am 50, and I have found this road, where I was heading for already before finding it. (I ate 70% chocolate in the morning since a long time- in my opinion the best fat bomb of all, 85% chocolate, did eat not so much carbs, always fresh cooking;)) But more and more radical my change became, after reading Jimmy Moore and the wonderful cookbook by ao Tim Oakes. I am now on MFP, recording since 5 days, and guess what? My weight is finally moving! And my god, it's so empowering. I never could do the calorie counting thing, or any other diet for that matter. But now, it's magic. I have lowered especially my fat intake, but that's still around 70% of the total. This control is truly what I have been looking for all my life. And it humbles me and makes me so happy that I can teach my daughter later. Because even though, maybe I never was too overweight, I have always felt it, and the fact that I just couldn't get it down was truly a dark thing in my life. And now, that's gone! I feel great!     Thank you for this great website and all the excellent information.

    I would like to make a suggestion.

    There is so much great information that it is often difficult to find what I want. Could a search box be put in? An example is that I am participating in the 2 week challenge. I wanted to get the menu for yesterday and could not find the challenge anywhere. Today I accessed it only as I received a mail about what to do on Day 1. Its very cumbersome this way.

    I also have been enjoying the lectures by Stephen Phinney but each time I want to hear another I have to search though pages and page till I hit it by chance.

    Have started diet and it's going great.
    A Question - Day 2 - Didn't feel hungry so skipped Lunch. Took my glucose level after 4 hours from Breakfast and it was down to 5.2. Great!! Had Dinner. Wasn't hungry this morning so I went on the 16:8 fast. Took my glucose at 11am and my reading was 6.6??? Have I done something wrong??
    Feel great - although I haven't lost any weight - yet!!
    Bit worried about all fats etc - I know you say they are good oils but I don't want my cholesterol to go up as well(5.1).

    My daughter and I have been doing this diet, with not much success. Bacon and eggs in the morning, I skip lunch while she will have an avocado, then always 1 of your great recipes for dinner. I did the 2 week challenge and only lost 5 lbs. It's been 2 months and I have lost a total of 7 lbs, she has lost 6 lbs. It's kind of discouraging after reading all the success stories. I am 58 and through menopause, have Graves Disease and on synthroid. I need to lose 70 lbs or so. She had her second baby 4 months ago and needs to lose about 25 lbs. She is 31. What are we doing wrong?

    I am new to this site, but not to low carb. Long story (surgeries, illnesses, etc.), but I am now ready to get back to my low carb eating plan (need to lose weight and control diabetes). My question is, "Can I use kefir on a low carb diet?" One of my recent illnesses involved Candida Overgrowth and some bad medical side effects it caused. I have been using kefir to help heal my stomach. I use coconut milk to make it, but must add 1 tsp sugar to the coconut milk to "feed" the kefir grains while they turn the milk into kefir probiotic. I am told that this should not increase the carbs by time I use it because the grains eat the sugar. But I don't know if this is true.

One of the really good features is when you access your account there is a part that is "MY QUESTIONS" so one can EASILY find the questions one has asked and the replies.     Because there are so many pages on which people can post comments or leave thoughts it is quite difficult to retrieve them later on when an answer or reply is posted by the dietdoctor-team.

    Couldn't it be possible to funnel all membership comments into one web page and have the website-software remember on which page and at which time the user entered his/her comment ?
    Would it also be possible to be able to select only the comments/postings one has entered (identified by membership-id. or topic on which the comment was posted) together with the replies that were given by the team ?

    For non-membership comments there could be another separate web page with the same functionality but it would not be possible to select comments by means of membership-id. only by the topic or page on which the comment was posted.

    Just a thought...

    I was wondering about trying the low carb diet however I've heard from doctors that your supposed to eat every two hours to maintain blood sugar stable what are your thoughts on that?
    Its supposed to prevent low blood sugar which can get you very hungry next meal and also k heard from doctors that even if you eat all vegetables and no carbs your blood sugar can also rise cause its also about how nuch you eat?
    The ideal way of eating they suggest is eat small meals every 2 hours. Even if its a refined processed carb it wont spike blood sugar because its a very little bit, the concept is to 'graze' all day but not feel that super hunger attack we get first thing in the morning for lunch and dinner, all do too low blood sugar. But if we keep 'grazing' every two hours 'small portion of whatever we like, we keep blood sugar stable, therefore the next meal we wouldnt be super hungry. What are your thoughts?

    Hi, I'm on the month free trial but I can't seem to access everything. For example I was reading on Twitter an excerpt from a book by Nina Teicholz, got to the end and it then came up with options to see videos, eg More with Nina Teicholz. With the free trial, do I get to see ALL of the videos full length or just part of them? Also I find when reading through Twitter links it doesn't remember I'm on a free trial and asks me to log in, which I can't do as I haven't set up a password. Is this usual or have I missed a step in the setup?
    Incidentally I have loosely done (my uneducated) version of the LCHF diet for a week, (only just accessing the free trial yesterday so not following the guidelines I now know) and this morning, through laziness I had cereal for breakfast. Man, was that a mistake, within 5 minutes I felt bloated, my stomach felt distended and I had a headache! That has shown me quite strongly how high carbs in processed food can be so bad for one.

    Eating every two hour sounds really stupid...eat low carb with a lot of fat 2-3 times a day instead (that will give you a stable blood sugar 24h). 🙂

    Hi My Name is Yvette,

    I am really scared.. I have always felt that I was ok with camouflage clothing to hide my fat stomach.. For the last three years I wake up feeling nauseated and stomach hurting.. I went to the doctor and he stated I need to loose weight and change my eating habits.. so I started working out 4 days a week with the same result no weight lost. Saturday I went shopping and every other store I was out of breath.. I told my daughter I feel like I am pulling 60 pounds as I walked.. I am at my heaviest weight 2.15 at 5/6 inch tall.. I found the Diet Doctor website and I have been following the strict program for 3 days.. I feel a little depressed. I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing with results.. I was very proud today one of my employees gave me donuts and I gave them to another person.

    I just want to make sure I eat the right food and enough.. I get bored eating the same thing.
