Drugs, Cigarettes, Alcohol… and Sugar?

Here’s the seventh and last part of the great “Skinny on Obesity”-series, featuring dr Robert Lustig.

He makes the case that sugar should be regulated by the government, using taxes and limiting the availability, inspired by the way we already regulate cigarettes or alcohol. I know that government regulation is a controversial subject, especially in the US. But I think dr Lustig’s arguments are strong. The obesity epidemic is already an emergency. Not acting decisively will likely have bad consequences for us all.

Unfortunately this will be a long struggle against the sugar and fast food industry, similar to the one against Big Tobacco. It may be even harder as there’s even more money in food than in cigarettes. But the fight will have to be won. The alternative is just not acceptable.

Stress and Your Weight

Here’s episode 6 of the “Skinny on Obesity” series. It’s more conventional thinking than before: Stress makes you eat more.

Thats’s probably true, but it almost misses a bigger point. What kind of food do we eat in a “fast-paced, fast food life”? The food that is available everywhere, 24-7. The high sugar, high starch industrial food.

Mothers Giving Birth to Generation XL

Here’s part five of the marvelous UCTV-series “The Skinny on Obesity”. This seven minute episode is about how mothers influence the future weight of their children even before they are born. High insulin levels in pregnant moms leads to bigger babies. This may have repercussions as the baby grows up, increasing the risk of obesity and disease.

The first signs of the coming disaster may already be apparent in the US. For the first time average lifespans are starting to decrease.

Earlier parts of the series (highly recommended)

The #1 Cause of Obesity: Insulin

Oh my god. This 3rd episode of “The Skinny on Obesity” may be the best short video on obesity I’ve seen. Not because dr Robert Lustig tells me something I didn’t already know, but because he explains it so crystal clear that a kid will understand.

Do you want people to understand the reason behind perhaps 90 percent of obesity epidemic? Spread this video. It needs to be seen by as many people as possible.

The bottom line is that the cause of garden-variety obesity is relatively simple: Excess (processed) carbs increases insulin which increases fat storage. Some bloggers on the internet have objections to this, but that does not change the facts.
